Summary: | Regional electronic networks are bringing medicine into the digital age and showing people that it is possible to achieve the Bush administration's goal of electronic health records for all Americans. More than 100 regional networks now electronically link doctors, hospitals, laboratories and pharmacies. They are creating the backbone for a national network, including personal health records for patients to use to manage their own healthcare. They are also on their way to showing that electronic records can improve care, save lives and reduce costs. Low start-up costs also encourage doctors to participate, leading some networks to use private grants and federal money. Technology exists that will facilitate the secure exchange of information and the integration of diverse data. |
