| Summary: | Pressure is growing, particularly from young, computer-literate researchers, for end user searching of data bases and it has been introduced at the Japanese pharmaceutical company Daiichi Seiyaku. Courses were run for training in choosing appropriate data bases and keywords. A manual highlighting differences between search systems was produced. Japanese personal computers are used for searching with PCOM communications software. Manuals cover characteristics of each data base, log-on procedures, commands, codes, search strategies, etc. Usage costs have increased, but not drastically. CAS Online accounts for 51% of usage at 2,410 minutes per month. Future problems relate to training for new staff and likely increased use and costs. End user searching is inevitable and a strategy for encouraging it is advisable. 00 V.R.H. |
