Summary:With the resumption of Usiminas' Ipatinga Blast Furnace 3 production, after the economic crisis in march 2009, there were sharp increases on wall temperature of the hearth, concentrated in two distinct regions. The application of usual practices, including the use of charging lump ore of titanium, has not prevented the worsening situation, occurring partial loss of carbon brick of the hearth. To restore the previous condition to crisis, led Usiminas to test the new injection technology of synthetic titanium (Rutilit) through the tuyeres, together with Sachtleben Chemie GmbH (Germany). After the knowledge gained of the Rutilit injection practice, it has been possible to control the temperature of the carbon brick wall, promoting the quick repair of the affected area, keeping the titanium dioxide in slag into desirable range and maintain the carbon bricks thickness.
