Summary: | This special issue comes at a time when there is much interest in understanding the historical context of events unravelling in Malawi. The effects of political and economic liberalisation, following Dr Banda's removeal from power in 1994, exhibit complex, convoluted dynamics, which require new and sometimes different explanations. While the first part of the democratisation period has received a reasonable amount of scholarly attention, the period in the new millennium, particularly developments in its second decade, remain in need of systematic historical and socio-economic analysis. |
