| Summary: | Objectives : This study aimed to determine the effect of death anxiety, and loneliness on suicidal ideation and analyze the factors influencing suicidal ideation. Methods : In this study, data were collected from elderly participants aged >65 years. Two-hundred and thirty data sheets were collected ; of which, 167 were used in the analyses. All subjects were evaluated with psychological inventories. The participants were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of suicidal ideation. Statistical analyses included the Chi-square test, student t-test, Pearson’s correlation test and hierarchical regression. Results : Suicidal ideation among the elderly participants showed a prevalence of 17.3%. Income (p=0.022), physical illness (p=0.009), alcohol consumption (p=0.003), social support (p=0.044), quality of life (p<0.001), depression (p=0.037), loneliness (p<0.001) and death anxiety (p=0.019) showed significant differences between the suicidal ideation and non-suicidal ideation groups. Income (r=-0.212), social support (r=-0.277), and quality of life (r=-0.328) showed a negative correlation with suicidal ideation ; whereas, physical illness (r=0.219), death anxiety (r=0.222) and loneliness (r=0.496) showed a positive correlation with suicidal ideation (p<0.01). Social support, quality of life, and loneliness were significant influencing factors ; and loneliness was the most significant predictor (β=6.701). Conclusion : Death anxiety and loneliness were significantly associated with suicidal ideation. Moreover, loneliness was the most important predictor of suicidal ideation. KCI Citation Count: 1 |
