Summary:Elementary school students will soon be taught English as part of their regular curriculum. One argument after another have been put forward for or against English language teaching at elementary schools in Korea. The controversy is still very much alive. Both sides of the controversy have their own pieces of evidence that seem to prove their case. It is regrettable, however, that each side looks at the issue from a limited point of view. The present study examines both sides of the controversy from a wider point of view, and specifics some conditions for the success of English language teaching at elementary schools in Korea.
