Summary:Electrochemical reduction behavior of tantalum ions was explored in a chloride-based ionic liquid electrolyte comprising 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (EMIC) and tantalum pentachloride (TaCl5). cyclic voltammetry (CV) was employed to assess reduction potentials, electrochemical reversibility under varying scan rates, and thermal effects on reaction characteristics. Two distinct reduction stages were identified at -0.56 V and -1.07 V, indicating a multistep mechanism. The redox behavior was found to be diffusion-controlled, with ipa/ipc ratios below unity confirming quasi-reversible characteristics. The electron transfer number calculated via the Laviron equation was approximately two, suggesting a transition from Ta(V) to Ta(III). Furthermore, the reduction peak potential shifted nonlinearly toward more positive values with increasing temperature, implying dynamic changes in tantalum ion speciation within the electrolyte. These insights provide a valuable foundation for designing low-temperature electrodeposition processes in EMIC-based ionic liquid systems. KCI Citation Count: 0
