Summary:Xiangsheng and stand-up comedy are a representative comedy genre in China and Western countries, respectively. Xiangsheng and stand-up comedy performances don’t require stage properties or complicated props, but spoken words. This minimalist form of performance is well liked by the audiences. However, the differences in the production of humor between xiangsheng and stand-up comedy have not been well studied yet. Based on the relevance theory, we compared and analyzed the xiangsheng and stand-up comedy. The results show that both xiangsheng and stand-up comedy strictly follow relevance theory in the process of making humor. On the other hand, we also found that xiangsheng and stand-up comedy use very different modes to produce humor, while both of them share a common mechanism in humor production. KCI Citation Count: 0
