A method of suppressing hunger in a human subject, who is obese or at risk for obesity (e.g., overweight), comprising administering at least about 20 mg/kg body weight/day of bioactive peptides comprising VPPR, LADR, LSPR, TVGPR, or any combination of two or more (e.g., two, three, or four) of the foregoing as a protein hydrolysate mixture, wherein the bioactive peptides can be obtained in a low molecule weight (< 3 kDa) peptide fraction obtained from canary seed (Phalaris canariensis L.).
