PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new 2-deoxy-5-S-(2-pyrimidyl)-1,4,5-trithiopentofuranoside derivative useful as a synthetic intermediate for 4'-thionucleoside promising as an antiviral agent or the like. SOLUTION: The compound of formula I (R is a protecting group for hydroxyl group such as an acyl, an arylmethyl or a trialkylsilyl; R is an alkyl or an aryl; R is H, F, methyl or trifluoromethyl), for example, S-phenyl 2,3-dioxy-5- S-(4-methoxy-2-pyrimidyl)-1,4,5-trithio-D-glycero-pentofuranoside is obtained by reacting a 2-deoxy-1,4,5-trithiopentofuranoside derivative of formula II with sodium hydride and further reacting the reaction product with a pyrimidine derivative of formula III.
