Summary:A radiotherapy apparatus comprising a radiation source 107 to deliver therapeutic radiation in coplanar and at least one non-coplanar configurations, a beam shaping apparatus 200,214 such as a diaphragm or a multi-leaf collimator, and a controller 140 to control the beam shaping apparatus to apply a limit on a field of radiation 122 produced by the source based on whether it is operating in the coplanar or non-coplanar configuration. A beam receiving apparatus such as a beam stopper 320 or radiation detector 310, may be positioned to oppose the radiation source in the coplanar configuration. The controller may limit the field of the beam in the non-coplanar mode so that it remains directed toward the beam receiver. The apparatus may be mounted on a rotatable gantry. A method of controlling such an apparatus comprising limiting the field of radiation delivered dependent on the apparatus operating in a non-coplanar mode.
