Summary: | Methods for rapid removal of carbon monoxide (CO) from CO-binding hemoglobin, myoglobin, and cytochrome c oxidase in CO-poisoned subjects are described. The disclosed therapies involve the use of reasonably designed, modified CO metabolic regulator (RcoM) proteins and pharmaceutical compositions thereof, which scavenge carbon monoxide from poisoned tissues. Recombinant RcoM compositions are infused into blood, which rapidly isolate carbon monoxide in the blood and limit the toxic effects of carbon monoxide on cellular respiration, oxygen delivery and oxygen utilization.
