A photographic subject tracking device equipped with: a first degree-of-similarity calculation unit that calculates the degree of similarity between a template image used for tracking and an image within a search region; a photographic subject position identification unit that identifies, on the basis of the calculated degree of similarity, the position of a photographic subject to be tracked within an input image; a second degree-of-similarity calculation unit that calculates respective degrees of similarity between the image within the search region and multiple template images used for resizing determination and generated on the basis of the tracking-use template image; a matching position identification unit that identifies, on the basis of the calculated degree of similarity, respective matching positions within the input image for the multiple template images used for resizing determination; and a size changing unit that changes the image size of the tracking-use template image and the images used for resizing determination, on the basis of the degree of density of the multiple identified matching positions.
