Summary:Cp*Co(III)-catalyzed intermolecular C(sp(2))-C(sp(3)) assembly of (hetero)arenes with alpha-diazomalonates using a direct C-H functionalization logic was developed. A series of (hetero)arenes underwent alkylation efficiently under the assistance of pyrazolyl and pyrimidyl directing groups under relatively mild and operationally simple reaction conditions. Good functional group tolerance, satisfactory yields, and excellent regioselectivity were found. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
