Summary:Microwave propagation in the atmosphere can be influenced by dust particles; in order to be acquainted with this effect, we need to calculate the microwave attenuation caused by dust particle. According to the relation between microwave wavelengths and atmospheric dust particles sizes, Rayleigh scattering theory can be used. The scattering field of particle is equivalent dipole radiation. First microwave scattering angle distribution around a dust particle is calculated, it correctly reflects the relation of the differential scattering section with scattering angle, wavelength and radius. Then the average scattering and absorption cross sections are calculated at a dust particle; as the wavelength decreasing or the radius increasing, both of the two sections increase. The simulation results can provide practical basis for overcoming the dust’s impact on microwave propagation.
