Abstract The automatic shadow generation algorithm is one of the most important and difficult problems in the 2D animation transition process from traditional hand-painted to computer-aided production. Aiming at this problem, this paper analysed the research status of the shadow generation algorithm and the shadow painting in traditional hand-painted process. On this basis, it proposed an automatic shadow generation algorithm, using projection technology achieved automatic generation inner shadow and outer shadow of the two-dimensional modeling by definition of point light source and introduction of two-dimensional animation modeling surface at different angles. This algorithm has been applied to the actual animation production process, and achieved good results.
