Summary:The published paper is a welcome addition to the literature on the subject of advanced treatment of municipal wastewater. The authors report the `unexpected result' of `significant virus removal' across the microfiltration (MF) membranes during the course of the investigation and pose the question of whether `a precoat layer of membrane fouling is responsible for the removal pattern'. The purpose of this discussion is to comment specifically on that aspect of the investigation.
