Summary:The digital economy challenges traditional business activity models, and the most notable changes take place in the creation of modern science-intensive products and technical innovations. Analyzing the present state of scientific and technological development, the authors highlight the main trends affecting the training of specialists in the field of engineering and technology: digitalization, virtualization, globalization and creation of new scientific fields. Basing on the carried-out analysis, the authors propose a model for the formation of requirements for the engineer professional competencies in the digital economy. As the base competencies, the authors consider the formation of digital competencies of university graduates in the context of modern Russian higher education. It also considers the contradictions that arise in the process of forming a graduate's personality on the basis of his abilities development and implementation in the digital economy and the readiness of the educational process subjects to resolve them.
