The act of constructing meaning is an interactive process which involves the reader, text and purpose of reading. Teaching Metacognitive strategies to the students helps in acquiring knowledge while learning. In the reading process, learners can improve reading ability which later results in good performance. Metacognitive Instruction increase students’ understanding of the text and Metacognitive strategies will help reading academic text. Though importance of reading is realized, the method of teaching ‘Reading Comprehension’ is not given prominence in Indian schools instructional practices. Students do not get an opportunity to think independently and conceptualize the spirit of the subject while practicing reading, due to lack of innovative methods inculcated in learners during the reading classes. In truth, the present state of teaching English language in a majority of Educational Institutions at all levels needs a lot of overhauling. Hence, paramount importance must be given to training and orientation of students in constructive learning environment. It is in this assumption; the present study aims to ascertain the effectiveness of an innovative strategy with a tool known as Metacognitive Instructional Design to improve reading competency of Higher Secondary students. Hence, the research problem has been identified and stated as “ Study of Metacognition and Reading Comprehension ”.
