Summary:This paper evaluates the impact of the duration of heads of state in power on economic growth on a panel of 41 countries in sub-Saharan Africa over the period 1990-2016. The results find diminishing returns after the optimal threshold of twelve, eleven and fifteen years for sub-Saharan Africa, English-speaking and French-speaking African countries respectively. The results are robust in both static and dynamic settings as well as for fixed effects related to the educational profile of heads of state.
