노인 돌봄과 의료행위의 윤리적 딜레마: 알란 베넷의『알렐루야!』(Allelujah!)를 중심으로

본 논문은 신자유주의의 개념과 생명의료 윤리가 얽혀 있는 알란 베넷의 『알렐루야!』에 묘사된 고령화 사회에서 노인 돌봄의 복잡성을 살펴본다. 신자유주의 자본주의의에서 노인 의료서비스 이용은 경제적 지위에 의해 결정되는 경우가 많으며, 지배적인 사회시스템과 맞지 않는 국가 의료시스템에 의존하는 사람들은 의료 불균형과 소외를 겪게 된다. 의료 민영화가 이루어진 사회구조에서는 국가가 경제적 이유로 비생산적인 계층으로 여겨지는 노인환자들의 공공의료 혜택을 줄이려는 경향이 있다. 환자가 자율적으로 죽음을 결정하는 조력자살과 달리 의료진에 의한 자비 살인 개념은 생명윤리 기준에 정면으로 반하는 것이다. 본 연구는 노인을 단지 수동적인 돌봄의 대상자가 아닌 자신의 열망과 자율성을 가진 역사적 주체로 인식하여 돌봄에 대한 대가를 지급하는 행위를 통해 노인에 대한 획일적이고 부정적인 사회적 인식에 도전하고자 한다. 나아가 이 연구는 노인에 대한 공감과 이해의 필요성을 강조하며 노인환자를 바라보는 시각의 전환을 주장한다. This paper examines the complexities of geriatric treatment amidst an aging demographic as portrayed in Alan Bennett's Allelujah! intertwining the tenets of neoliberalism with biomedical ethics. Within the framework of neoliberal capitalism, geriatric healthcare access is frequently contingent upon economic status, creating disparities and marginalizing those reliant on state-sponsored healthcare systems that are at odds with the dominant social system. In a healthcare system dominated by privatization, elderly patients deemed economically unproductive, face pressures to reduce their numbers in order to alleviate the financial burden on public healthcare resources. Contrary to assisted suicide, which involves patient autonomy in the decision to die, the concept of mercy-killing by medical staffs stands in stark opposition to biomethical standards. This study aims to challenge the uniformly negative social perception of marginalized elderly who by paying for their care with their lives, should be recognized as historical subjects with their own aspirations and autonomy rather than mere passive recipients of care. Furthermore The study underscores the importance of empathy and understanding towards senile for a revised perspective on elderly patients. KCI Citation Count: 0
