한흑구 문학에 나타난 미국의 영향 연구

그동안 한흑구 문학 연구는 미국의 인종차별 문제를 비판적으로 그린 작품 위주로 이루어졌다. 그 결과 그의 문학에서 미국은 부정적으로 형상화된 것으로 간주되었다. 하지만 그동안 논의되지 않은 작품들까지 분석하면 양상은 달라진다. 이 논문에서는 그동안 간과된 그의 작품들을 분석하여 한흑구 문학에 나타난 미국의 영향을 전체적으로 재고해 보았다. 한흑구가 미국으로부터 받은 영향이 간접적으로 드러난 것은 단편소설 「길바닥에서 주운 편지」에서는 자유로운 성관념, 남녀평등 의식이고, 1930~1950년대 조선(한국)인의 삶을 그린 단편소설들과 장편소설 「4형제(四兄弟)」에서는 신흥부국 미국을 체험한 작가의 눈에 비친 가난하기만 한 조국의 형상화이다. 미국의 영향이 직접적으로 드러난 작품은 1950년대 장편소설 「마을을 내려다보며」인데, 여기서 미국은 한국경제부흥의모델이다. 또 1960년대 장편 「젊은 예술가」에서는 기독교 정신에 입각한 선한헬퍼(helper)들인 미국인이 형상화되어 있다. 수필에서는 그가 제시한 삶의 모토나 추구하는 가치들이 기독교를 신봉하는 미국인들에게서 차용된 것임이 드러난다. 이도 역시 미국의 직접적 영향으로 볼 수 있다. 결론적으로 한흑구의 문학에서 미국은 인종차별적인 나라라는 점에서는 비판되지만, 대체로는 모방의대상으로 추앙되고 있으며, 이런 친미적 경향은 그의 문학이 갖는 보수성의 근간이 되었다. Previous studies on Han Heukgu’s literature mainly focus on works that critically address racial discrimination in the United States. Consequently, his literature has been perceived as portraying the U.S. negatively. However, when previously overlooked works are analyzed, this picture changes. By analyzing his neglected works, this study revisits the overall influence of the U.S. on Han Heuk-gu’s literature. In the short story “A Letter Found on the Street,” Han Heuk-gu reveals the indirect influence of the U.S. through themes of liberal views on sexuality and gender equality. In his short stories and the novel “Four Brothers” that depict the lives of Koreans between the 1930s and 1950s, the U.S. is portrayed as a prosperous, rising nation. This is in contrast to his homeland, which is presented as impoverished through the eyes of a writer who experienced America. His 1950s novel “Looking Down on the Village,” where America serves as a model for Korea’s economic revival, is a work that explicitly reflects the direct influence of the U.S. Similarly, in his 1960s novel “The Young Artist,” Americans are depicted as benevolent helpers grounded in Christian values. His essays also reveal that the life mottos and values he presents are borrowed from devout American Christians, which can also be viewed as a direct influence of the U.S. In conclusion, while Han Heukgu’s literature criticizes the U.S. for its racial discrimination, it largely reveres the country as a model to emulate; this pro-American tendency forms the foundation of the conservatism in his literature.
