| Summary: | This paper aims to investigate the semantic differences between two causal clauses in Korean (i.e. nikka-clause and ese-clause) based on their modal meaning. In this paper, we claim that the causal clauses create a certain type of modal environment, namely reason context. We suggest that Anand & Hacquard’s (2009) distinction between subjective epistemic and objective epistemic can be extended to Korean causal clauses. In this way, we propose that nikka-clauses and ese-clauses correspond to subjective and objective epistemic respectively. Considering the nature of the reason context, we also discuss how the speaker’s epistemic certainty can be involved with uttering a sentence with a causal relation felicitously. Taken together with Mari’s (2016) idea that the criteria for the mood choice can be parameterized, we suggest that the properties of the reason context which distinguish it from the attitude context lead to the mood distinction between nikka and ese-clauses.
