Summary: | Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of neurofeedback training in a patient with chronic insomnia who had a long-term history of sleep medication use.
Methods: A 56-year-old woman with an Insomnia Severity Index score of 16 participated in 10 neurofeedback sessions over four weeks. The training focused on enhancing sensorimotor rhythm while inhibiting theta and high beta waves. Comprehensive assessments were conducted to measure changes in subjective and objective indicators of insomnia before and after the intervention. These assessments included sleep quality evaluation, insomnia severity, quantitative EEG, polysomnography, actigraphy, and sleep diaries.
Results: Following neurofeedback training, no consistent changes were observed in objective indices. However, subjective measures, such as sleep quality and emotional state, showed improvement during the follow-up. No adverse events were reported.
Conclusions: Neurofeedback training appears to be a safe and effective non-pharmacological treatment for insomnia, leading to improvements in sleep quality and related subjective symptoms. Further research with personalized protocols, larger sample sizes, and longer treatment durations is necessary to confirm its efficacy and safety. |
