조나단 에드워즈의 신학적 미학에 나타난 천지창조와 인간론

본 논문은 조나단 에드워즈(Jonathan Edwards)의 창조 신학과 인간론에 나타난 신학적 미학의 내용을 철학적 고찰과 성경 해석을 통합하는 방식으로 분석한다. 에드워즈는 하나님의 아름다움을 삼위일체 안의 내적 교제 속에서뿐만 아니라 창조 행위와 인간에게 외적으로 전달된 실재로 이해하며, 이를 ‘발산(emanation)’이라는 개념을 통해 설명한다. 그는 창조의 목적을 하나님의 영광의 전달로 이해하고, 그 영광이 지적 존재인 인간의 도덕적·영적·지적 특성을 통해 반영된다고 본다. 특히, 인간은 하나님의 형상(Imago Dei)으로 창조된 존재로서 하나님의 아름다움을 인식하고 감상하며 표현할 수 있는 독특한 능력을 부여받았으며, 이를 통해 하나님을 영화롭게 하고 창조의 목적에 부합하는 존재로 자리매김한다. 본 논문은 에드워즈의 발산 개념과 성향주의, 삼위일체론, 성경 해석을 종합적으로 고찰함으로써, 그의 신학적 미학이 창조론과 인간론 안에서 어떻게 균형 있게 전개되는지를 밝힌다. This study analyzes Jonathan Edwards’s theological aesthetics as expressed in his doctrines of creation and humanity, by integrating philosophical reflection with biblical exegesis. Edwards understands divine beauty not only as an intrinsic reality within the Trinitarian fellowship but also as something externally communicated through creation and to humanity, a process he describes with the concept of “emanation.” He regards the purpose of creation as the communication of God’s glory, which is reflected through human beings-rational, moral, and spiritual agents created in the image of God (Imago Dei). As such, humanity is endowed with a unique capacity to perceive, appreciate, and express divine beauty, thus fulfilling the purpose of creation by glorifying God. This paper demonstrates how Edwards’s concepts of emanationism, dispositionalism, and Trinitarian theology converge with his biblical interpretation to form a theologically balanced account of aesthetics within his doctrines of creation and humanity.
