대학 교양교육의 정체성과 문화 다양성에 대한 이론적 고찰

연구목적: 오늘날 새롭게 정의되는 교양교육은 보편교육과 공통교육의 범주를 넘어, 문화 다양성과 민주주의의 가치를 실질적으로 지지하는 교육 패러다임 전환에 기여하고 있음을 보여준다. 연구방법: 이 연구는 미래지향적으로 재정립된 교양교육의 정체성을 살펴보고, 교양교육이 어떻게 문화 다양성을 수용하면서 고등교육의 목표를 실현하는 데에 기여하는 지 조사하였다. 이를 위해 자유교양교육의 핵심 가치, 포용적 캠퍼스 조성과 학습 환경에서의 실천적 전략, 그리고 학생의 정체성과 시민성 발달에 미치는 영향을 중심으로 분석하였다. 연구결과: 오늘날 대학은 학생을 선발하는 주체에서 학생이 대학을 선택하는 시대로 전환되었으며, 이에 따라 대학은 본질을 유지하면서도 환경 변화에 유연하게 대응해야 한다. 특히 교양교육은 단순한 과목의 집합이 아닌 교육 방식과 내포된 정신, 형성되는 가치와 태도를 통해 정의되며, 급변하는 사회에 적응하며 지속적으로 진화해야 한다. 이 연구는 교양교육의 정체성을 자유교양교육(Liberal Education)의 가치에 근거하여 재조명하였고, 실용교육과의 통합을 통해 실제 삶의 맥락에서 유의미한 학습을 구현할 수 있는 방향을 제안하였다. 또한 AI 시대와 학습자 중심 교육 패러다임 전환에 따라, 교양교육은 교수자와 학습자의 역할 변화, 능동적 학습 환경, 포용성과 문화 다양성에 기반한 학습 조건을 수용한다. 교양교육은 학생들의 비판적 사고력, 소통 및 협업 능력, 문제 해결력 등 핵심 역량을 기르는 데 기여하며, 통합적이고 지속가능한 학습경험을 통해 책임 있는 글로벌 시민으로 성장하도록 돕는 핵심 교육으로 자리매김하고 있다. 결론: 교양교육은 졸업생들이 대학에서 배운 지식, 기능, 가치와 태도를 삶의 다양한 영역에서 지속적으로 발전시키고 사회 정의, 문화, 과학기술, 민주주의 등 공적 삶에 능동적으로 참여하는 책임 있는 글로벌 시민으로 성장하도록 이끄는 데 그 의의가 있다. 미래지향적으로 재정립된 교양교육은 단순한 교육 이념을 넘어 문화 다양성과 민주주의를 실질적으로 지지하는 교육 패러다임 전환에 기여한다고 결론지을 수 있다. Purpose: Contemporary re-definitions of liberal education go beyond the boundaries of general and common education, contributing to a paradigm shift that substantively supports the values of cultural diversity and democracy. Methods: This study explores the redefined identity of liberal education from a future-oriented perspective and investigates how it contributes to achieving the goals of higher education by embracing cultural diversity. The analysis focuses on the core values of liberal education, practical strategies for building inclusive campuses and learning environments, and the impact on students' identity and civic development. Results: Contemporary universities are shifting from institutions that select students to institutions chosen by students. Accordingly, universities must maintain their essence while responding flexibly to environmental changes. Liberal education, in particular, should not be defined merely as a collection of courses but through its pedagogical approach, underlying philosophy, and the values and attitudes it fosters. It must continually evolve to adapt to a rapidly changing society. This study reexamines the identity of liberal education based on the values of traditional Liberal Education and proposes ways to implement meaningful learning in real-life contexts by integrating it with practical education. Furthermore, in response to the age of AI and the shift toward learner-centered educational paradigms, liberal education must embrace changes in the roles of instructors and learners, foster active learning environments, and create inclusive, culturally diverse learning conditions. Liberal education plays a vital role in cultivating students’ core competencies―such as critical thinking, communication and collaboration skills, and problem-solving abilities―positioning itself as essential in helping students become responsible global citizens through integrative and sustainable learning experiences. Conclusion: Liberal education is significant in that it guides graduates to continuously develop the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes acquired in college across various areas of life, and to grow into responsible global citizens who actively participate in public life―including social justice, culture, science and technology, and democracy. It can be concluded that liberal education, redefined from a future-oriented perspective, contributes to a paradigm shift in education that transcends a mere educational ideal and substantively supports cultural diversity and democracy.
