Summary:PURPOSE: This study analyzed the utility of bone metabolic markers, serum and salivary cortisol concentrations after exercise training in osteoporotic elderly people. METHODS: Subjects consisted of 31 elderly people (ageave=76.90±2.11 years old). The 60 min exercise training program included yoga, elastic band resistance exercise and silver dance done three per week for 12weeks. Participants were divided into normal group (T=1.03±0.88, n=6), osteopenia group (T=-1.78±0.11, n=13) and osteoporosis group (T=-3.31±0.17, n=12) on the basis of T score. RESULTS: The osteoporosis group showed significant decrease of BMI(p<0.01), increase of BMC (p<0.01) and decrease of ALP (p<0.01) concentration. Serum cortisol concentration and salivary cortisol concentrations (r=0.265, p<0.05) showed a significant positive correlation. BMI showed an independent relationship with the osteoporosis group(β=0.663, p=0.038). ALP concentration was also found to be a useful prognosis of osteoporosis (osteoporosis group: AUC=0.724, sensitivity=64.3%, specificity=58.8%). Serum cortisol concentration and salivary cortisol concentrations were not significantly related with the osteoporosis group, but showed a significant positive correlation as predictors of osteoporosis. CONCLUSIONS: Changes in bone metabolic marker of normal and osteoporotic patients showed a different pattern. In addition, it had a positive effect on bone mineral density improvement, but not on cortisol concentration. KCI Citation Count: 0
