Summary:The zoo is required to implement various environmental enrichment programs for the animal welfare of rearing animals. Recently, carcass feeding using captured wild boars and deer, which are increasing in number and causing negative impact on agriculture and forest vegetation in Japan, has been conducted as part of environmental enrichment in zoos. Kumamoto City Zoological and Botanical Gardens, in cooperation with Wild meǽt Zoo and Kyushu University, has been conducting carcass feeding useing captured wild animals since the early stages of its spread. This report summarized the environmental education events using the carcass feeding for visitors to the zoo. The carcass feedings using captured wild animals were conducted three times as environmental education events. At each event, we examined the effectiveness of the carcass feeding for lions and a snow leopard, and conducted a questionnaire survey of zoo visitors. It is thought that the observation of the carcass feeding for lions and a snow leopard showed an environmental enrichment effect, and the questionnaire results were favorable for the implementation as environmental education event. We would like to continue this event in the future, as it is expected that the environmental education event will be highly effective at environmental education.
