Summary:This review elucidates the process and rationale behind reconstructing unused biomass availability data for estimating biochar production potential. Drawing upon past estimation methodologies and leveraging open data, we reconstructed an updated availability dataset. To ensure the sustainable utilization of this data, a detailed methodology is provided as supplementary material. Focusing on unused biomass originating from farmland, we examined biochar production potential under various scenarios involving different pyrolysis temperatures. Finally, we highlight the importance of continuously updating and utilizing fundamental data to promote biomass use, and we consider the role and potential of biochar within the MIDORI Strategy for Sustainable Food System by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF).
