Summary:A case of medullary carcinoma in the thyroid gland in a 41-year-old woman with familial thyroid disease in reported. Surgical treatment, including a total thyroidectomy and neck dissection, was performed and the postoperative course was uneventful. Some members of her family also suffered from thyroid gland tumors. Medullary carcinoma is a rare thyroid gland tumors. It can be related to familial disease, including multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) type2. In addition, recent molecular biological studies have shown that a mutation in the RET gene may be a causative factor of medullary carcinoma. The importance of making a genetic analysis is also emphasized.
