Patty's Industrial Hygiene and Toxicology Fifth edition (1)の定義によれば, SBSとは(1)非特異的な症状(眼, 鼻, 喉の刺激症状, 頭痛, 倦怠感, 皮膚刺激症状, 集中困難), (2)ビル内の多くの人が訴える, (3)ビルを離れると良くなる, (4)多数の要因が重なって原因になることがあり, 詳しく環境を調べても原因が良くわからない事もある, とされる. 原因が明らかで医学的に病名がつくもの, 例えばアレルギーや過敏性肺炎はシックビルディング関連病と呼ばれ, 広義のシックビルディング症候群である(2-4). どちらも室内空気質の汚染により生じる可能性がある. 1990年代にSBSと同様の症状が日本の一般住宅で観察されるようになり, これをシックハウス症候群(Sick House Syndrome:以下SHS)と呼んだ(3-5).
