| Summary: | This study examined Japanese and American fifth and eighth graders’ prior knowledge of war and their responses to war literature to investigate the factors that influence their reading. This study first identified a socio-cultural factor: Japanese and American students were familiar with different wars. Therefore, their perceptions of war also differed. In addition, both Japanese and American students empathized with the protagonist in their readings, but American students were more likely to critique the works and their authors compared to Japanese students. Second, regarding the factor of reading material choice, this study found that when students read The Day War Came, they tended to focus on the emotional scars of war and drew specific lessons from the story. On the other hand, when students read The Rabbits, they thought about war in a more multifaceted way, focusing on different cultures, different species, conflicting values, and the destruction of the natural environment that can result from war.
