Summary: | A novel liquid-crystalline dimer with an asymmetric structure was synthesized. Furthermore, aliquid-crystalline polymer was obtained by using the liquid-crystalline dimer. The liquid-crystalline dimer,having cholesteryl and azobenzene mesogenic groups, is a chiral reactive compound having an epoxy terminalgroup. The liquid-crystalline dimer exhibited TGBA and cholesteric mesophases on heating and coolingprocesses. On the cooling process, an ordered liquid-crystalline phase such as a smectic F phase was formed. Theliquid-crystalline polymer was obtained by the reaction of polyethyleneimine and the epoxy containingliquid-crystalline dimer. The liquid-crystalline polymer showed glass transition and mesophase-isotropic phasetransition temperatures. The thin film of the liquid-crystalline polymer acted as an alignment agent forlow-molecular-weight liquid crystals |
