Summary: | Activated carbons with high specific surface area were prepared from beer lees by chemical activation with KOH. We examined the influence of the preparation conditions, such as temperature and impregnation ratio, on the pore structure of the prepared activated carbon, and examined the adsorption ability of benzene and acetone on the prepared activated carbon. The specific surface area increased with an increase in carbonization temperature up to 800°C and decreased at 900°C because of excess activation. Itreached a maximum value at the impregnation ratio of 2.0. The activated carbon, which was prepared at the carbonization temperature of 800°C and at the impregnation ratio of 2.0, had very high specific surface area of 2, 440mm2/g. It was found that KOH worked effectively as the activating reagent in two temperature ranges, below 500°C and above 600°C. The amount of benzene and acetone adsorbed on the prepared activated carbon were much larger than that on the commercial activated carbons. |
