Summary:In order to visualize and analyze the axonal arborization originating from single hippocampal pyramidal neurons, horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was injected into a neuron in each field of rat hippocampus by pressure under monitoring of its release. After three days' survival, the rat was sacrificed for HRP detection with PAP immunohistochemistry. Labeled axon fragments were traced from more than a hundred serial sections and put into a computer. Each pyramidal neuron was reconstructed from the data and analyzed. In association with other data, the computer drawings of a single CA2 pyramidal neuron seemed to be a whole image of the neuron.
