| Summary: | Adobe Systems Inc's Portable Document Format (PDF) is an emerging document interchange technology based on the company's PostScript page-description language and a 7-bit ASCII code. Using PDF users can view, search, annotate and print fully formatted documents on computers that do not have the operating system or program that produced them. Therefore a document created using PDF on a Windows PC can be viewed transparently by a recipient who only has access to a Macintosh. That document will display in its original layout and its graphics and text will translate into the highest resolution available on the recipient's output device. PDF is implemented in Adobe's Acrobat Exchange, Acrobat Distiller, Acrobat PDF Writer and Acrobat Reader products that supply viewing, translation, navigation and conversion tools. Adobe has announced several strategic alliances with electronic publishers, software developers and information service providers that likely guarantee the company to be the prime contender in the trend toward transparent, cross-platform document communications. |
