Summary: | The World Trade Organization (WTO) is an intergovernmental organization that has helped expand modern globalization by reducing tariff barriers and by regulating international trade among countries. Since 2016, both President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump have refused to allow the appointment of new judges for the critically important Dispute Settlement Process and as of December 11, 2019, the WTO can no longer adjudicate trade conflicts. The America First philosophy of no multilateral institutional intrusion on its sovereignty could lead the WTO to proceed without the United States, as has been suggested by former WTO Managing Director Pascal Lamy. |
