Summary:Applicatives—a valence-increasing phenomenon in which otherwise oblique expressions take core argument positions—are well-attested in languages of the Philippines. This paper will examine these structures in the southern Philippine language Tboli primarily using data from grammars by Porter (1977) and Forsberg (1992) and comparisons to observations made in the related language Tagalog. Together with discussion and analysis of the Case marking and pivot selection mechanisms in Tboli, the paper demonstrates how benefactives and instrumentals are housed in low applicative constructions.
