Obesity-Related Changes in Cardiac Structure and Function Among Asian Men and Women

In the entire cohort (mean age 49.8 ± 10.8 years, 65.2% men, mean BMI 24.3 ± 3.6 kg/m2), higher BMI and larger WC were associated with greater LV mass, left atrial dilatation, lower tissue Doppler early-diastolic mitral annulus relaxation velocity (e′), higher early-diastolic mitral inflow-to-tissue...

More Information
Summary:In the entire cohort (mean age 49.8 ± 10.8 years, 65.2% men, mean BMI 24.3 ± 3.6 kg/m2), higher BMI and larger WC were associated with greater LV mass, left atrial dilatation, lower tissue Doppler early-diastolic mitral annulus relaxation velocity (e′), higher early-diastolic mitral inflow-to-tissue Doppler velocity ratio (E/e′); more pronounced contractile dysfunction in terms of decreased GLS, GCS, and lower torsion after adjusting for age, sex, LVMi, heart rate, biochemical data, active smoking, histories of hypertension, diabetes, or cardiovascular disease (all p < 0.05) (Table 1). Adjusted for age, blood pressure, heart rate, fasting glucose, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, estimated glomerular filtration rate, histories of hypertension, diabetes, and active smoking or cardiovascular disease in multivariate analysis.e’ = tissue Doppler early-diastolic mitral annulus relaxation velocity; E = mitral inflow Doppler early-diastolic velocity; GCS = global circumferential strain; GLS = global longitudinal strain; IVS = interventricular septal thickness; LAV (max) = maximum left atrial volume; LVEDV = left ventricular end-diastolic volume; LVEF = left ventricular ejection fraction; M/V = mass-to-volume ratio; RWT = relative wall thickness.
