Summary:The Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) guidelines for the prevention of retained surgical items [3] state that perioperative team members should contribute to a culture that respects the need for precise accounting of items, instruments, and device fragments used during surgical procedures for safety by limiting distractions during each count, adhering to standardized counting practices, and promptly informing colleagues of any discrepancies in the count as they arise. The verification was carried out in a dry and room temperature environment; thus, the results obtained may differ when the subject is in a state of hydration, such as with blood or saline solution.
