Summary:This paper presents a model for investigating the variation of the total free energy of an infinite solid that contains a void and is subject to biaxial loading. The void shape in the model, which is controlled by three independent parameters, ranges from circles, ellipses, to eye-shaped profiles with smooth tips or sharp cusps. In addition to the different shapes, the model also has the advantage that the corresponding elasticity problem can be solved exactly. As an application, the model is adopted to investigate the effects of the void shape on material failures via morphological transformation from the energetic point of view.
