Summary: | In this study, we present an approach to alter the inertance of inerter-based devices, depending on the variation of the frequency of the external excitation. In this regard, we propose a newly developed variable inerter which is able to change the inertance using a versatile type of continuously variable transmission (CVT) mounted on a ball-screw inerter, it is called adaptive tuned viscous inertance damper (ATVID). The proposed device is capable of generating a variable inertance and viscous damping simultaneously contributed to provide seamless variability in its frequency. To evaluate the device performance, damping properties of the ATVID-controlled is compared with passive controlled and uncontrolled single-degree-of-freedom structures exposed to the harmonic ground excitation with variable frequency. Results show an excellent level of vibration reduction in structure using ATVID in a large width of the frequency band of the excitation. |
