A long-term prognosis after interferon therapy for chronic hepatiti C

In this study, long term therapeutic effect of interferon (IFN) on chronic hepatitis (CH)-C was investigated. 252 patients with HCV-RNA were treated with 6MU of human lymphoblastoid alpha-IFN for 8 weeks, daily, followed by two or three times weekly and were followed for more than 2 years. 16 cases...

Summary:In this study, long term therapeutic effect of interferon (IFN) on chronic hepatitis (CH)-C was investigated. 252 patients with HCV-RNA were treated with 6MU of human lymphoblastoid alpha-IFN for 8 weeks, daily, followed by two or three times weekly and were followed for more than 2 years. 16 cases were dropped out by IFN side effect ete. In remainder 236 cases, complete response (CR) were 105 cases (44.5%). In 31 cases of CR, 30 cases (96.8%) were improved in histological grading. The occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients were 2 cases (0.8%) after termination of IFN. Those results indicate that CR cases could be improved histologically and IFN could have preventive effect on the development of HCC in chronic hepatis C.
