More Information
Summary:We report a case of a 69-year-old man with metachronous quintuple cancer during a 12-year period. He had undergone a sigmoidectomy for sigmoid colon cancer at the age of 55, a cholecystectomy and a partial resection of the liver bed for carcinoma of the gallbladder at the age of 59, a distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer at the age of 60, and a right upper lobectomy of the lung for lung cancer at the age of 65. He was seen at our outpatient clinic because of frequent urination at the age of 67, and closed examination revealed prostate cancer. The prostatic cancer has been treated by hormone therapy for about 2 years, he remains hale and hearty as an outpatient. Analysis of microsatellite instability revealed that stomach and lung cancer lesions were of microsatellite stability. The treated patient during his lifetime in whom five proved metachronous primary cancers of dissimilar histogenesis had developed in five different organs is extremely rare.
