Summary:A 59-year-old man with abdominal pain and vomiting was admitted on December 7, 2002. A colonoscopy revealed advanced sigmoid colon cancer type2, and abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed a low-density area 20mm in diameter in S8 of the liver. After abdominal ultrasonography (US) and angiography, the liver mass was diagnosed to be a metastatic liver tumor of sigmoid colon cancer. First, sigmoidectomy was performed on December 17, 2002, followed by a partial resection of S8 of the liver. Macroscopically, the resected specimen of the liver mass was elastic but hard and had an irregularly-shaped margin; microscopically, the lesion was composed of extensively fibrosing stroma with scattered narrowing or small vascular spaces. It was compatible to sclerosed hemangioma of the liver. Though a sclerosed hemangioma of the liver is a rare benign liver tumor generally not indicated for surgical resection, preoperative diagnosis can not rule out intrahepatic cholangiocellular carcinoma, metastatic liver tumor and sclerosed hepatocellular carcinoma. This case is reported together with a review of the literature.
