Summary: | Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of various interventions on accelerating orthodontic tooth movement. Materials and Methods: A systematic review of articles selected from PUBMED and Google Scholar was carried out. Additional studies were hand searched. Only randomised controlled trials (RCTs) published from 1st January 2011 to 2016 were included in this study. These studies compared the effectiveness of various interventions on accelerating orthodontic tooth movement. Results: A total of 23 articles were identified through electronic database searching. 21 articles were obtained after elimination of duplicates which were then screened. 10 full-text articles were accessed for eligibility criteria. 10 trials were identified for inclusion in the review. Comparing the test group using interventions for accelerating orthodontic tooth movement with the control with conventional orthodontic tooth movement. Conclusions: Overall, the evidence is not sufficient to determine if a particular intervention is helpful in reducing the treatment time. Even though minimally invasive techniques were studied, it needs sufficient data to come to a particular conclusion. Amongst all the non- invasive interventions, LLLT > MOP > vibrations > photobiomodulation were effective. Limitation: Even though all interventions were, different study evaluated different type of malocclusion and durations of treatment. |
