Summary:The experimental investigation has been made to prevent the burrs produced on workpiece edges in turning operations. The correlations between cutting conditions and burr size and a mechanism of burr formation are discussed. The results are as follows : (1) The deformation of a workpiece edge by cutting force causes burrs. (2) There are two types of burrs, large size burrs and extremely small size burrs produced by breaking of large size burrs. (3) The small size burrs are produced at large depth of cut, small feed rate, large nose radius and small side cutting edge angle. (4) The brittle materials easily produce the small size burrs.
