Summary:Studies have been made on the changes of the concept, classification, symptomatology and terminology of functional amblyopia. The ambiguity of the original concept, definition, and classification suggested by Alfred Bangerter has been discussed and the author emphasized importance of etiological concept and classification rather than those symptomatological ones by Bangerter. With regard to amblyopiogenesity, clear distinction was made between the “lid ptosis” and “lid closure”. Furthermore, the forced-choice PL (FPL) and operant PL (OPL) were clearly explained in order to avoid frequent misleading confusions, which are often made among those engaged in the assessment of visual acuity in infants.
