A case of chronic hepatitis C with drug-induced cholestatic hepatic disorder during interferon administration

The patients was a 44-year-old male who had received drugs such as sodium aurothiomalate and indomethacin due to rheumatoid arthritis since 1988. In 1989, the diagnosis of chronic hepatitis C was made. Administration of interferon (IFN) α-2b 1MU/day (three times weekly) was commenced on June, 1991....

Summary:The patients was a 44-year-old male who had received drugs such as sodium aurothiomalate and indomethacin due to rheumatoid arthritis since 1988. In 1989, the diagnosis of chronic hepatitis C was made. Administration of interferon (IFN) α-2b 1MU/day (three times weekly) was commenced on June, 1991. During the IFN treatment jaundice appeared. The patient was hospitalized and all medications were discontinued. Serum transaminase level changed within 100IU. Total bilirubin was markedly elevated on the 10th day of hospitalization (Max. 19.66mg/dl). However, these values subsequently decreased. Liver biopsy revealed drug-induced cholestasis with hepatitis. Lymphocyte stimulation test was negative for all administrered drugs during past three years, but IFN-induced cholestatic hepatic disorder was strongly suspected in view of the clinical course.
