TWITTER IMPOLITENESS METADISCOURSE AND THE POLITICAL DOMAIN

ABSTRACT Defying social norms of verbal conduct can be perceived as a risk to reputation, particularly in the political sphere. Taking this into view, our aim is to discover how Twitter1 users reacted to the formula “son of a bitch”, employed by US President Biden at a press conference. The theoretical background of the study relies on the theories of impoliteness and the Principle of Impoliteness Reciprocity. Our data comes from the tweets published as a reply to journalist Doocy after he commented on the episode. Another episode, involving insults in the political domain, was also examined to expand the findings. It happened when Philippine President Duterte cursed Barack Obama in a live speech. In both occasions, the findings point to the legitimization of impolite behaviors in political discourse, which were framed as instances of counter-impoliteness. As for the impoliteness metadicourse, it was populated with insults, unpalatable questions, and playful language. The findings suggest that the process of “normalization of shameless language” may be underway on Twitter. RESUMO Desafiar as normas sociais de conduta verbal é sempre um risco à reputação, especialmente na esfera política. Diante disso, nosso objetivo é descobrir como os usuários do Twitter reagiram à fórmula “filho da puta”, empregada pelo presidente dos EUA, Biden, em uma coletiva de imprensa. O embasamento teórico do estudo se baseia nas teorias de impolidez e no Princípio da Reciprocidade da Impolidez. Nossos dados são provenientes dos tweets publicados como resposta ao jornalista Doocy, alvo do xingamento, depois que ele comentou sobre o ocorrido. O segundo episódio analisado ocorreu quando o presidente das Filipinas, Duterte, xingou Barack Obama em um discurso ao vivo. Em ambas as ocasiões, as descobertas apontam para a legitimação de comportamentos indelicados no discurso político, que foram classificadas como instâncias de contra-impolidez. Quanto ao metadiscurso da impolidez, este foi produzido por meio de insultos, perguntas provocativas e linguagem jocosa. Os resultados sugerem que um processo de “normalização da linguagem impolida e indecorosa” pode estar em andamento no Twitter.
